The Golden Superbrand Serbia Award

It is an honor to inform you that the Institute for Byzantine Studies was awarded with the Golden Superbrand Serbia Award on 13th June 2016, in Metropol Palace Hotel, for its great contribution to science and culture in Serbia. On this occasion efforts of the Institute in the organization of the 23rd International Congress of Byzantine Studies, an event of great importance for the Byzantinists in Serbia and abroad, as well as for the Republic of Serbia, were especially emphasized.

Promotion of ΠΕΡΙΒΟΛΟΣ-Mélanges offerts à Mirjana Živojinović I-II

It is our pleasure to announce the promotion of ΠΕΡΙΒΟΛΟΣ-Mélanges offerts à Mirjana Živojinović I-II which will take place on 2nd February at 13:00, at the Main hall of the SASA. Professor Ljubomir Maksimović, vice-president of the SASA, Professor Miodrag Marković, corresponding member of the SASA and Dr Dejan Dželebdžić, Research Associate at the Institute for Byzantine Studies and the editor of  ΠΕΡΙΒΟΛΟΣ  will present the Volume.

It is our pleasure to announce that The Serbian Committee for Byzantine Studies and The Institute for Byzantine Studies of the SASA organize The Sixth National Conference of Byzantine Studies in Belgrade, 18-21 June, 2015.
The conference will have three thematic sessions.
The main session is dedicated to The Kingdom and Archbishopric of Serbian and Maritime lands of the Nemanjić dynasty-towards the 800th Anniversary of the Kingdom and the Autocephalous Church of Serbia. The other two sessions are dedicated to general Byzantine topics and to the challenges of the Contemporary Byzantine Studies. The members of the Organising Committee are: dr Djordje Bubalo, dr Smilja Marjanović Dušanić, dr Srdjan Pirivatrić, dr Milan Radujko and Miloš Cvetković, Ph.D Candidate (secretary).   • Professor Claudia Rapp (University of Vienna) gave a lecture “Author, Text and Audience in Byzantine Literature: the Example of Hagiography.” The lecture was held at the Main Conference Hall of the University of Belgrade on 20th March 2015.
  • The 50th volume of Zbornik radova Vizantološkog instituta (Recueil des Travaux de l'institute d'études byzantines) dedicated to the director of the Institute, academician Ljubomir Maksimović, had been presented on Tuesday, 3rd March 2015, in the Central Hall of the SASA at 13 o'clock. Professor emeritus PhD Athanasios Markopoulos, academician Momčilo Spremić and PhD Bojana Krsmanović, the editor of the 50th Volume, presented the publication.
  • Professor Albrecht Berger (University of München) gave a lecture Between glorious past and apocalyptic expectation: Living in Byzantine Constantinople as a guest of the Institute, on Thursday, 19th June 2014, in the Conference Hall 2 of the SASA, at 18:00. 
  • We are pleased to announce that Crkvena politika Vizantije od kraja ikonoborstva do smrti cara Vasilija I (Church policy of Byzantium from the end of Iconoclasm to the death of Emperor Basil I) (special edition No 43), by Ph.D Predrag Komatina, Research Associate of the Institute, came out of press.

  • Frederick Lauritzen (Fondazione per le scienze religiose Givanni XXIII di Bologna) gave a lecture Paraphrasis as interpretation: Psellos and a canon of Cosmas the Melodist (poem 24 Westerink), as a guest of the Institute for Byzantine Studies, on 26th June 2013.
  • The Institute for Byzantine Studies organized the presentation of The Byzantine world in the Balkans, I-II on 2nd April 2013, at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. The publication was presented by academician Aleksandar Loma, Professor Miodrag Marković and one of the editors, Bojana Krsmanović.
  • Professor Michael Grünbart (University of Münster) gave a lecture Spoken word in context: Performing speeches at the Byzantine court, as a guest of the Institute for Byzantine Studies, on 9th October 2012.
  • Antonios Emilios N. Tahiaos, foreign member of the SASA, gave a lecture Byzantine heritage in the Slavic World – Acceptance and Dialectical process, as a guest of the SASA, on 1st June 2012.
  •  Professor Christo Matanov (Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”) gave a lecture The Origin of Sebastokrator and Despot Dejan and his Family: a Reinterpretation, as a guest of the Institute for Byzantine Studies, on 9th May 2012.
  • The Institute for Byzantine Studies organized a scientific meeting on which the researchers from Serbia, who have participated at the 22nd International Congress of Byzantine Studies in Sofia (22-27 August 2011), presented their congress papers, on 26th and 27th April 2012.
  • Professor Ruth Macrides, Senior Lecturer in Byzantine Studies at the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies, University of Birmingham, gave a lecture The Late Byzantine Palace and its Ceremonial on 9th December 2011.
  • The international French–Serbian Meeting Remanier, métaphrases: functions et techniques de la réécriture dans le monde byzantin was held in Belgrade at the Faculty of Philosophy from 9–12 September 2010 in the organization of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade, University of Sorbonne–Paris IV, Institute for Byzantine Studies of the SASA and Centre pour l’histoire et la civilization byzantine de Collège de France, Paris. 15 researchers from France and Serbia participated in this event, among them academicians, university professors, eminent experts in the field of Byzantine studies and Ph.D students. Some of the associates of the Institute for Byzantine Studies were also among the participants. This meeting thematically limited to the functions and techniques of transcription in the Byzantine world represented a great opportunity for both French and Serbian scholars to exchange their experiences and results in this field. The proceedings of this event also named Remanier, métaphrases: functions et techniques de la réécriture dans le monde byzantin were published by the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade in 2011.
